BSHC – Partner in the BLUE CRISTAL Centre of Competence

The Bulgarian Ship Hydrodynamics Centre (BSHC) – Varna joined the Centre of Competence Blue Coastal Marine and Riverine Innovative & Sustainable Management of Environments and Resources.

The project brings together seven leading Bulgarian research institutions under the coordination of the Institute of Oceanology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS). Project partners include Ruse University Angel Kanchev, the Centre for Hydro- and Aerodynamics – Varna at the Institute of Metal Science, Equipment and Technologies Acad. A. Balevski (BAS), Burgas State University Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov, the Institute of Fish Resources (Agricultural Academy, Varna), and the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy.

The primary strategic objective of the Blue Cristal Centre of Competence is to establish and develop a distributed research infrastructure that integrates multidisciplinary expertise, competencies, and advanced tools in support of the blue economy in the Black Sea Region and the lower Danube River Basin. Through cutting-edge research and innovation, the Centre aims to promote integrated and sustainable management of environmental processes and trends, strengthen the adaptive capacity of stakeholders in the transition toward clean technologies and activities, mitigate the impacts of climate change, and advance digital transformation with a neutral environmental footprint.

Within the project, the Centre for Hydro- and Aerodynamics leads a dedicated work package focused on the development of innovative renewable marine energy technologies. The initiative also includes plans for the construction of a new state-of-the-art wind tunnel facility for aerodynamic model testing of structures subjected to airflow.

The project coordinator at BSHC – Varna is Assoc. Prof. Nikolay Markov, PhD.
