The design of the BSHC experimental facilities started in 1966. The project was executed in partnership with several international organizations, foreign research centers, Bulgarian yards, institutes and universities.

Milestones in BSHC history

1973-1976 – The main experimental facilities of HAC/BSHC were built with technical and financial support from the UNDP (United Nations Development Program) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
1976 – The newly built Experimental Laboratory Base (ELB) was incorporated with the existing Bulgarian Ship Design and Research Institute.
1977 – ELB was transformed into Ship Hydrodynamics Institute (SHI) – a division of the State Economic Unit “Shipbuilding” within the Ministry of Machine-building and Metallurgy. SHI also became internationally recognized as the Bulgarian Ship Hydrodynamics Centre (BSHC).

2004 – BSHC was transferred from the Ministry of Economy to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS).
2010 – Academy’s General Assembly transformed BSHC into a detached research division (Hydro- and Aerodynamics Centre – Varna) within the BAS Institute of Metal Science, Equipment and Technologies “Acad. A. Balevski” in Sofia. The BSHC scope of activities was preserved during the organizational transformation.
